Small Business Know How

April 30th, 2009

Although lots of people have great small business ideas, the practical application of such ideas is the one that matters. Decision making is sometimes just as hard as the actual change of job, life style or career. You should begin by some overall issues that are necessary for the implementation of any small business ideas you may have.

Let’s assume you want to work try one of the fancy dress dropshippers and try to promote a range of costumes, it is wise and safe to start with the promotion of one line only and then grow from there. Moreover, when you dedicate your efforts to something you know well, results will appear sooner than if you devoted time to a totally new element. Do not ignore a certain hidden psychology in sales according to which your belief in the great features of the product is passed on to the customers, and this should set the line of conduct to only promote what you believe in.

Then, the do’s and don’ts of basic marketing should always be considered when trying to apply all sorts of small business ideas. For example, the cash-flow projection for year in advance is necessary for any business that needs to grow. Then, starting big could be a challenge or a stupid thing to do as long as you don’t have a reputation and the credentials necessary to make a name on the market. Stay low and take small steps without risking to get in debt and not have the money to pay back the loans.

If you don’t know what small business ideas to put into practice, maybe it’s good to investigate the opportunities and see what matches best with your overall situation. There are people who choose to quit their job and start a business competitive to the one they used to work for. The problem is that sometimes things may not work the way you expect them to and competition with the former employer have severe consequences.

Before putting small business ideas into practice, make sure you have a decent level of understanding of the principles that run the domain you want to venture in. Such knowledge comes with ample personal research, from studies or from lots of working years in the field. Presently, there are even courses that assist people with their marketing difficulties, but such consultancy should be prior to the implementation of the small business ideas as such.

Leading from the front or the back

April 30th, 2009

Leadership styles - there is a lot of rubbish written about leadership styles - so let’s make this really simple to understand. There are really only 2 leadership styles - leading from the front and leading from the back..
What? No complicated methodology? Nothing complicated that needs an army of consultants to set up and deliver?
No - a simple question instead.
When you lead, do you lead from the front or from the back?
Imagine this
You are out taking your children for a stroll (if you don’t have any children, just imagine you do..) and you are strolling in the park. You let them run on ahead and play. You idle along at the back - maybe have a drink or an ice cream. You are leading from the back. You have everything under control and all is running smoothly. You have no need to get up and start shouting and telling children what to do.
But then you leave the park
And you leave to cross over the road. You shouldn’t want to be at the back now. Children will probably expect to be shouted at. You have to take control and now you are leading from the front.
This can easily be translated into the work place.
Relaxed
Imagine that you are at work and everything is going well. The team has hit their targets and it’s nearly holiday time and everyone is feeling good. Now is the time to lead from the back. No one will want to hear from you. No one will want to go over the work rotas for the next 6 shift. You can easily lead from the back
Now imagine that your offices have been hit by a power cut. The offices are in complete darkness and staff and need direction and leadership. Now is the time to lead from the front.
Going missing at this point would be a very good way to lose the respect of your staff. What they need is to see you in command.
Of course, you will change from front to back during the working week and a good boss will be able to effortless change from one to the other.
A good way to learn how to do this is to listen to staff talking amongst themselves.
Are they worried? What are they anxious about?
Are they working? Would you rather they be working?
Is their behaviour what you would expect at the current time? (For example, if they are strolling about and a big order is needed to go out, then you need to lead from the front and create a little more urgency into proceedings)
A bit of chatter is usual in most workplace but by tapping in to it, managers can decide where they need to position themselves to get the most out of staff.

The beginning point for any online business is the making up of of a super unique web page.

Anyone running some form of business that could benefit from online advertising will select blogging as a good way of advertising. Most business entrapenures who take advantage of the profit blogging brings, choose to include various options on the pages.

New 5 Year Loss Carryback Will Help Struggling Small Biz

April 29th, 2009

If you run a small business and you had a loss in 2008, Jack at FixTax.info wants you to know that you can now carry that loss back for up to five years rather than the paultry two year period. This could be huge. If you have unfiled returns for any of those periods this could be the answer to your prayers. If you do not have unfiled returns, you could receive refunds of taxes for periodsas far back as 2003. This would be limited to 2005 under normal circumstances. So how do you do this?  Prepare and file the old returns as normal, based on the rules that were in place at the time. You then prepare the 2008 return. After all returns are completed, get your hands on IRS form 1045 .  Begin  by looking at taxable income for 2003.  You can offset that number with the loss from 2008. If there are current year losses left, move up to 2004 and so on until your entire 2008 loss is eliminated. No matter when you stopped filing returns you should always go back to the earliest year in order to create overpayments for later years. This strategy could reduce penalties and interest on unfiled years. Generally small businesses that aren’t corporations (including sole proprietors filing Schedule C with their Form 1040) may accelerate a refund by using Form 1045, Application for Tentative Refund.  (Corporations canuse Form 1039.) This tentative refund claim generally must be filed within one year after the end of the tax year of the NOL. In addition, the current year’s tax return must be filed no later than the date the Form 1045 is filed. However, if you have previously filed an election to forgo the NOL carryback, you must have filed by April 15, 2009!   Form 1045 should be filed at the same address your return is filed, as listed on the tax return instructions. Accelerated refunds paid with Form 1045 are described as “tentative” because the applications for refunds are possibly subject to review at a later date. This provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 applies if you operate a small business that doesn’t average greater than fifteen million dollars in gross receipts over a three-year period ending with the tax year in which the Net Operating Loss is incurred.Unless you have a background in tax preparation, you should probably seek professional help in doing this.  FixTax.info has a lot of other great tax advice.

Is It Possible That Your UK Business’ Credit Card or Plastic Security Card Might Be Vulnerable to Fraud?

April 29th, 2009

Plastic Security Card

Having a credit card or plastic security card seems as if it would offer a sense of security for employees, consumers, and stock. A recent report by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation notes that you may not be a secure as you think. For every method that’s been developed for creating plastic security cards, there’s a companion method for defeating it. In this commentary, we’ll study the simplicity of counterfeiters’ efforts to duplicate Visa and MasterCard. Given that Visa and MasterCard comprise roughly 65% of US credit card debt, they are the most often targeted cards for con artists. This gives the sobering impression that when you can defraud such large corporations, you can target anyone.

Plastic Card UK

According the FBI report, most plastic credit card forgeries once depended on a one-step printing process that duplicated the logo and background onto a blank white plastic card. These days, cutting edge tech has allowed swindlers to include lamination and embossing of cards to their repertoire. In fact, counterfeiters are now capable of using counterfeit holograms and fully encoded false magnetic stripes in their products. Thanks to computers, printers, and blank cards, con artists now have the tools for even more convincing forgeries.

Plastic Card

The answer may lie in a new plastic credit card embedded with a computer chip rather than the standard hologram. Known as smart cards, these cards have a chip which will store info in an extremely secure manner and must be verified by personal identification number (PIN).

If you are a UK business owner who uses a plastic security card, you have to stay on top of counterfeiters’ attempts to duplicate a plastic card.

For UK businesses considering implementing a plastic security card, there’s a lot to consider. Some well-placed research will go a long way toward finding the optimal solution for your company’s individual needs.

Helping You Find Information For Small Businesses

April 28th, 2009

entrepreneur

Daily newsletters that provide business advice to businesses just starting up, as well as marketing advice and financial assistance provided by the SBA, are all resources that can be utilized by the new business owner. The Small Business Administration was created as an independent agency of the Federal Government to aid, counsel and offer protection for small businesses. These resources can range in price from very little to highly expensive.

The Small Business Administration offers most of these services under one umbrella. The one service that an entrepreneur will probably find the most helpful is the free online training through the Small Business Training Network. Online education is offered in starting a business. You can find information on business planning and writing a business plan, business management, finance and accounting, advertising and marketing, e-commerce and website building, international trade and retirement planning. Each course generally takes about 30 minutes to complete and is self-paced. For small businesses that are just starting out, the knowledge offered by these courses is a necessity.

For businesses that are just starting out and are seeking advice, the planner offered on the home page of the Small Business Administration website is a wonderful tool. It allows for everything from developing a business plan, growing the businesses profits, and planning for retirement. Advice is also available on topics such as advertising and networking, government contracts, software, international trade, healthcare, and grants, both government and private. The Small Business Administration website has links to a wealth of information. For small businesses, the knowledge library and form development links are invaluable. Live chat is available for real-time consulting on almost all of the above topics. Visit the website at http://www.sba.gov for more information.

Other websites and companies, along with private individuals, can offer the same resources for small businesses; however, they may not be reliable as the Small Business Administration. Many established businesses seek to prey on the new and inexperienced business owners. For that reason, it is important to ensure that all advice received is trustworthy. One piece of bad advice can leave a business bankrupt, or worse, in trouble with the IRS. Care should be taken to check and double check all information and make sure advice is both taken and used in the proper context.

The four functions of management

April 27th, 2009

The 4 functions of management are so easy to remember they are a useful pointer for any new manager and adaptable for existing and more experienced managers to keep them focused and motivated.

So, what are the four functions of management?

Plan – what is to be done, by whom, how and by when? This brings considerations of organisation goals and objectives, planning training (what is to be done and by when), training and health and safety considerations (by who & how).

Consequently, quite a lot for the new manager to think about…

Organise – Unfortunately, many people confuse organisation with delegation. All managers should be able to organise HOW things are done. Good ones can often leave most of this to staff. (A good manager won’t really care what time staff go to lunch as long as a ) they have one and b) continuous cover remains over the lunch period.

What the good manager needs to be able to do is work towards delegating some tasks. Where they actually get a junior member of staff to do part of the management job instead of the manager doing it themselves.

Monitor – OK yes, I know that in most other places, the third function is leading/ leadership but I am going to write about monitoring.

Suppose the planning is making 200 widgets of 3 different sizes, in 3 different colours by the end of the week.

Each widget is quite expensive to make so a good manager will not want to get to near the deadlin and have everything in the same size and colour and none in the other colours and sizes.

Therefore, they need some way of monitoring production, output, staff input etc. This could be as simple as instructing one member of staff to keep tabs on the colour, another on the sizes, another on the safety. (notice how, already, this has started on the delegate route…)

Control – Suppose that the early warning system outlined above worked like clockwork and the manager did receive “early warning” of possible defects. They must have sufficient power to over rule the production process to safely intervene. Without control over the production process, the manager will fail.

So, has the 4 functions of management struck a cord with you?

Maybe it has, but even if it hasn’t, believe me this was a lot less boring than the academic version…
