Tips for Running a Successful Home Base Business

September 6th, 2009

Plan Your Day
Spend a couple of minutes the night before making a to do list. Put the tasks that you dislike at the head of the list along with the most important ones. That way you will make sure you do them and minimize procrastination time – it’s amazing how washing and ironing can become appealing options.

Get Dressed
It’s so easy for home base business operators to head into their work space wearing their daggies or worse – their pajamas. If you get professionally dressed you will find that you automatically take on a more professional approach to your work.

Dedicated Office
Set up a designated office space somewhere where you can shut yourself away from the rest of the house. This will give you a private area to make calls and do your work without spilling into the living area where children can interrupt you. Try and find a room that has a door. At the end of your working day, close the door as though you are leaving work and don’t go back in until morning. This will give you down time away from work.

Set Hours
As a home base business it is very tempting and far too easy to get stuck at your desk at all hours of the day and night – set yourself business hours. That way you will ensure that you balance work and home life.

Family Support
Let friends and family know your working hours, so that they will understand when you are home at those times you will be busy. Always communicate clearly with them when you are under extra pressure so that they can give you some space to complete your tasks.

Join Networks
Joining a network in your local area that suits your needs will help alleviate isolation and open you up to new opportunities, potential clients, affiliates and friends.

Outsource Tasks
Pinpoint what your weaknesses are and look to outsource these tasks. Your time will be better spent on what you know and enjoy rather than spending hours fumbling over a task that someone else could do in half the time.

Communication
This is vital for any business. For one, get a dedicated business telephone number. This doesn’t have to mean a second line. Most phone company’s offer a duet number. This allows the telephone to ring in a different tone so you know which is a home or a business call. If you have broadband in your area, invest in getting it installed as you will save time when trying to communicate with clients as well as doing internet research.
